UNIV 2018
During Holy Week, a large group of students from our residences had the opportunity to travel to Rome and attend UNIV, an international university congress open to youth from all 6 continents. Each year participants are given a thought-provoking theme regarding a modern-day challenge and are tasked with offering solutions.
During the week of the Congress, our residents had the opportunity to take part in various activities such as international get-togethers, volunteering, and an audience with Pope Francis. Residents also went on cultural excursions to get to know the city of Rome. They enjoyed the historic monuments, Rome’s rich history and culture, as well as the experience of living Holy Week together with Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square.
RETHINKING THE FUTURE
This year, the theme of the UNIV Congress was “Rethinking the Future”. The category of Social Projects was won by a team formed by some of our residents. The team won a scholarship of 1.500€ to put towards the development of their social project.
Carmen Basanta (Primary Education and Pedagogy), Marianna McMillan (International Relations) and Laura Venzal (Law), together with teammate Víctor Lana (Law), defended their case “A new business model for millennials case study: PBC and Barabaiki” in Rome. “It seemed to us a great opportunity to investigate and reflect on the state of modern businesses. There is a new social enterprise paradigm being born in response to the current needs of society, and with the need for a model that places people at the center, we illustrated all this with a real example: BARABAIKI”, they tell us. “The objective of the project was to study how ethics and business relate in the current business landscape, as well as to revise the concept of company models by placing priority on the dignity of the person. UNIV gave us the opportunity to do international networking and to publicize the work of our social enterprise BARABAIKI (barabaiki.org).”
The prize money will allow the group to do more to develop their social enterprise BARABAIKI.
We congratulate them on this prize and for all the work they have done these last few months. We offer them all of our support in the continued development of BARABAIKI. Great job!
